Companies by industry
The register has no industry codes. We match companies by words in their name: 'Bau', 'Immobilien', 'Software'. That is rough but transparent, and every page says which words it looks for.
Real estate
Developers, property managers and companies that hold a single property. Many of them are small GmbHs with exactly one building.
Construction
Master builders, building and civil engineering, timber construction and building materials. Before you sign a contract, check the latest accounts: late filers often have a reason.
Holding companies
Companies that hold shares in other companies. Their own accounts show mostly investments and loans; the operating business sits in the subsidiaries.
IT and software
Software development, IT services, cloud and security. Most are micro companies with a handful of people; a few are large.
Energy
Solar, wind and hydro power, biomass and utilities, plus many project companies that run exactly one plant.
Hotels and restaurants
Hotels, inns, restaurants, catering and tourism. In the west many run as GmbH & Co KG; those are not listed here because their name usually names a person.
Transport and logistics
Hauliers, forwarders and logistics providers. Austria sits in the middle of Europe, and the number of forwarders shows it.
Trade
Wholesale, retail, import and export. The word 'Handel' in a name says little about what is traded; the business line on the company page does.
Consulting
Management consulting and advisory. Many are micro companies run by a single consultant.
Finance and insurance
Banks, savings banks, insurers, leasing and investment companies. Whether a company holds an FMA licence is not in the company register but in the FMA's company database.
Industry and engineering
Machinery and plant engineering, metal, steel, plastics and tooling. Some of the country's largest employers are among them.
Electrical and building services
Electrical engineering, installation, plumbing and heating. The trade licence is in the GISA trade register; the company and its accounts are in the company register.
Motor trade
Car dealers, garages and vehicle trade. Many are brand dealers with one or several sites.
Media and advertising
Publishers, media houses, advertising and marketing agencies. They range from one-person agencies to newspaper publishers.
Health and pharma
Pharma, medical technology, private clinics, care services and laboratories. Group practices usually carry the doctors' names and are therefore not listed.
Agriculture and forestry
Farming companies, forestry operations, estates and wineries. Most farms are not in the register at all, because farmers and foresters do not have to register.
Large companies of every industry are on the page Austria's largest companies.
